Kindergarten News for the week of May 19th – 23rd

Monday (May 19th) is day 5

In phonics we will introduce a vccv rule.

In math we will learn the positional words and location of shapes.  We will work on the words inside, outside, above, below, on, in front of, behind, left and right.

In reading we will read the story Building Beavers.

Tuesday evening will be our big graduation!  It will be held at our high school auditorium at 6:00pm.  Students should report by 5:30 to the gym to dress in caps and gowns.  Children should again wear a white collared shirt.  Girls are reminded not to wear big hair accessories so the cap fits properly. 

Friday is our PTO carnival.  Please dress your child to be out all day.  Students should wear sneakers.   (No dresses or skirts for the girls please!)  They will be in bouncers /on bikes etc. Sunscreen should be applied at home.   The only lunch for that day is a deli hoagie.  There will be no alternates.

We will practice on Monday and Tuesday morning for graduation.  Please try to have your child at school on time for this so they can be ready to walk over after announcements with the class.  Please dress your child for the weather!   Comfortable shoes would be great!

We will have an ice cream party again on Wednesday because our class donated the most money for the bowling fundraiser that benefitted big brothers/big sisters.

Mrs. Tarantelli and Miss Woodring’s Kindergarten Newsletter for the week of May 12th – 16th

We will have another busy week in kindergarten!  We will be testing for report cards, the end of the year and working in our memory books.

In phonics we are learning the sounds for combinations ar, or and er.

In math we will be learning more about 2d and 3d shapes and flat surfaces on shapes.  We will take a test.

In reading we are reading the story This is the Way we go to School. This is an informational text and we will learn about drawing conclusions.

Important dates:- Tuesday- May 20th at 6:00 pm we will have our kindergarten graduation in the high school auditorium.

Thursday- May 28th (rain date 29th) will be our kindergarten field trip!  We can’t wait! 

Friday- May 23rd is our carnival. 

Graduation will be held on Tuesday- May 20th at 6:00 pm in the high school auditorium.  Please have the children in the high school gym by 5:30.  Doors will open at 5:30 and children will dress in their caps and gowns and sit with their class until they enter the auditorium.  We are asking that the children wear a white collared shirt.  Girls are also asked not to wear their hair up or hair accessories so that the caps fit properly!  Caps and gowns must be returned after Graduation before leaving the hs.  The tassel is yours to keep! 

**library books need to be returned next week!!

The backpack program will not distribute backpacks after this week!

I am sending home our last book order today.  It will be due by next Friday!  You can also purchase books at the book fair on Monday evening from 4-7pm.

We will be going to the high school on Wednesday to see our elementary band and chorus concert.

Kindergarten news for the week ending May 2nd


Kindergarten News for the week of April 28th – May 2nd

 

v  Next week in Phonics we will be learning the two sounds of digraph oo as in the words hook and tooth.  Please review digraphs ck, sh, and voiced and unvoiced th.  We will not have Show and Tell.

 

v  In Math we will be learning sorting by 1 and more than 1 attribute.  We will then move on to graphing.

 

v  We are approaching the end of the year testing for kindergarten.  Each child will be tested by the Reading teachers.  Children will need to write a dictated sentence, recognize, write, and give the sound of every letter of the alphabet, be fluent in phonemic segmentation, be able to provide a word that begins with every letter of the alphabet, and be able to use a word in a sentence.  Please try at home to work on some of the areas to be tested to ensure that your child is fully prepared.   Our dibels testing is scheduled for May 1st and 2nd.

 

v  Field trip permission slips will be sent home shortly in your child’s folder.  Please complete, sign, and return the permission slip form as soon as possible.  Kindergarten will be traveling to the Pioneer Coal Tunnel and Lokie ride in Ashland.  **Just a reminder: Students will need to wear the North Schuylkill T-shirt that was provided by the PTO on the field trip—so be sure you have it ready.

 

v  In Reading we will read the story The Little Engine That Could. 

 

v  Please be sure to return the dvd order form with payment if you wish to purchase a dvd. 

 

v  We had  a PTO sponsored in-school program on Wednesday.  It was called The Brainshow and was a big hit with the children!

Kindergarten news for the week of April21st - 25th


Kindergarten News for the week of April 18th – 21st  

This week we will learn digraph th as in thimble and feather.  These are called voiced and unvoiced th.

In math class we will be finishing our unit on measurement.  We have been comparing things by height, length and capacity.   Our next unit will be about sorting, classifying, counting and categorizing data.  We will also get more deeply into graphs in this unit. 

In reading we will be reading the story Messenger, Messenger.  This is a rhyming story.  We will review the comprehension skill of compare/contrast.  Our question of the week is, “What kind of transportation help people do their jobs?”

When we return to school on Monday it will be day # 5.  We have book exchange on day #2.We have gym on day #3.  You may want to begin to hand in your boxtops, Redner’s receipts, Campbell’s soup labels, and moo lids from Turkey Hill before the end of the year! 

I will try to have one more book order before the end of school!

Our graduation pictures went very well!  They turned out great!!  I was surprised they came in so quickly.

We have a busy week next week.  Students from our high school Teens against Tobacco group will come and teach a short lesson on Monday.  On Tuesday we have a science class from the high school come to read us stories that they wrote.  On Wednesday we will see a PTO sponsored show called Brainshow Mania.  The children love this show!  On Friday we will have a short lesson from the diversity club.

kindergarten news for the week of April 14th - 17th


Kindergarten News for the week of April 14th – 17th    

This week we will learn digraph sh as in shark.  We will also be reading sheep books, Mrs. Wishy Washy books and Mrs. McNosh books! 

In math class we will be working on a unit that compares objects by length, size, height and capacity. 

In reading we will be reading the story Mayday! Mayday!  It is an informational text and we will be reviewing the letter X and the comprehension skill of cause and effect.  We have been reading more leveled readers for more practice on your child’s own reading level.

When we return to school on Monday it will be day # 1.  We have book exchange on TUESDAY!  We have gym on day #3. 

You may want to begin to hand in your boxtops, Redner’s receipts, Campbell’s soup labels, and moo lids from Turkey Hill before the end of the year! 

I will have one more book order before the end of school!  Try to redeem any coupons at this time.

You can send sh show and tell on Thursday.  It can be anywhere in the word! 

There is no school for students on Friday- April 18th for the short Easter break!  We will have a little egg hunt on Wednesday-weather permitting. 

Everyone enjoyed the wedding of Q and U today!  We blew bubbles, danced and ate wedding cake!  Q and U are stuck like glue!!

kindergarten news for the week of April7th - 11th


Kindergarten News for the week of April 7th – 11th

On Friday, April11th,  we will celebrate the wedding of Q and U!  We’re looking forward to that!  A small reception will follow!  Children may wear uniform clothing or dress up for the occasion! We are looking forward to the wedding of Q and U and hopefully everyone will remember that Q and U are stuck like glue!

We have finished learning all of the letters, but we still have much to learn!  Next week we will learn the long vowel rule.  (If a vowel is not followed by a consonant, the vowel is long and it is coded with a macron.  Examples are: a, hi, me so)

In math we will be learning about decomposing 11-19 further, finish that unit and take a test.  Our next topic will be about measurement.

In reading we will read a story called Max takes the Train.  This is an animal fantasy story and we will learn the comprehension skill of realism and fantasy.  We will review the letters j and w.  The children really enjoy this story!  Max from Max and Ruby is the main character in this story.  We will discuss different forms of transportation in this unit.    

We are now in the last marking period and the time will fly by until the end of the year!  Report cards came home today!  If you have questions or concerns about your child’s report card or their progress, please call me at school anytime between 7:45 and 3:45.  (874-3661 ext. 3241)

Monday will be day 1 on our rotation schedule and we will have gym on Wednesday!

kindergarten news for the week of March 31st - April 4th


Kindergarten News for the week of March 31st- April 4th  

·        Next week we will be learning the letter Qq as in quilt.  The girls will finally get to be Queens for a Day on Friday, April 4th!  The girls may want to dress up for this occasion!  We may have a small queen parade to do the queen wave!  We will learn more about combination “qu” too.  The boys and girls will even be invited to participate in a special wedding ceremony for Q and U!  This celebration will be next Friday ---April 11th . 

·        In Math, we will be learning how to decompose numbers 11-19.  That means different combinations of numbers to add up to a given number.

·        The physical exams for kindergarteners who need them will be on April 1oth. 

·        Our graduation pictures will be held on Thursday- April 3rdth.  We ask that the children have a white collared shirt if possible under their gowns because that is all that will show.  The girls should not wear anything in their hair because they will wear caps and the cap will not fit properly over ponytails etc!  All children will have their picture taken for the composite picture even if you are not purchasing a package! 

 

·        We will read the story Abuela next week.  This story has a lot of Spanish words in it!  Abuela is the Spanish word for grandmother. 

·        We will work on word list 20 and report cards will come home on Friday! 

·        We started the PSSA testing in our school today.  We were asked by Mr. Jones to switch our special and lunch times next week to accommodate other grades’ schedules for testing.  This will mean we have our special class in the morning and our snack and recess in the afternoon.   I’m looking forward to recess duty on Monday if it hits 60!

Kindergarten news for the week of March 24th - 28th


Kindergarten News

 

v Next week we will be finishing the letter Ww and its sound as in wagon and watermelon.  Review identifying and writing letters learned.  Also practice blending letters in three, four, and five letter words.   Our next letter will be Qq which is also our last alphabet letter!

v In reading our story will be If you could go to Antarctica.   This is an informational text. (non-fiction)  We will learn to categorize and classify.

 

v In math we will finish composing the teens using ten frames, review and take a test.  We will also begin the next chapter about decomposing the numbers 11-19.  The focus of our current chapter was to show the children how to divide the teen numbers into tens and ones.  The focus of the next chapter will show the children different ways to make the numbers 11-19. 

 

Please remember that we will have graduation pictures on Thursday- April 3rd.  Please let me know if you will not be purchasing a package of pictures.  All children will have their pictures taken for a group composite picture.  We ask that you have your child wear a white collared shirt for these pictures.  The children will be wearing caps and gowns for their pictures and the white collared shirt looks best underneath the gown.  All that shows is the collar!  We also ask that the girls wear their hair down and not in a high pony tail or have any large hair accessories or the cap will not fit properly! 

 

v We will be testing for our next report card already!  These will go home on Friday- April 4th

Kindergarten news for the week of March 17th - 21st


Kindergarten News

Next week we will be working on finishing the letter Xx as in the end of fox and x-ray.  Students will go on a treasure hunt throughout the building to find the “X” that marks the spot of their hidden treasure! How exciting!!!  There will be NO Show and Tell for X.  Next week we will also be beginning to work on the letter Ww and its sound as in wagon and watermelon.  Review identifying and writing letters learned.  Also practice blending letters in three, four, and five letter words. 

 

The children may wear the new shamrock t-shirts on Monday to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day if you purchased one.  If not, they may want to wear green or white. 

 

In reading our story will be Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

 

Wednesday, March 19th will be WATERY WEDNESDAY in Kindergarten.  We will be talking about water and completing different experiments involving water throughout the day.  It will be WONDERFUL!

As a theme for the week we will be discussing different kinds of weather.  Maybe we will even have a future meteorologist in our midst!

 

In Math we just took our topic test.  Please sign and return this after you check how your child did.  We will be working with 2 ten frames for the teen numbers and the children will show how to make the teen numbers using the ten frames.

 

 Now we just need some spring weather!

Kindergarten news for the week of March 10th - 15th


Kindergarten News for the week of March 10th – 14th  

This week in phonics we will be learning the letter Jj as in jar.  We will be identifying the vowel sounds heard in words.  They will begin a new take-home reader called Pig’s Jet.  We will begin to discuss what an accent is and how to find it in a word.  I will test word list 17 .  For “Jj” show and tell this week your child can bring an item that starts with /j/ or learn a joke to tell the class!  This may be written down or memorized.

In math this week we will be finishing the chapter adding up to 9 and finding all of the ways to make given numbers.  We also emphasized that the sum can be at the beginning of the number sentence or at the end of the number sentence. (for example 4+4=8 or 8=4+4)  Our next unit will about different ways to make the numbers 11-19.

In reading this week we will read the story One Little Mouse.  Our amazing words for this story are: woodland, vale, comfortable, nest, hollow and shadows.  This story is a rhyming concept book.  We will discuss consonant blends and the comprehension skill of sequence. 

We will be learning about St. Patrick’s day, reading some leprechaun stories and Irish tall tales. 

My ad was in the paper this week on Tuesday.  Your child will get a treat if they bring it.

Don’t forget to turn your clocks ahead on Saturday night!

Kindergarten News for the week of March 3rd- 7th


Kindergarten Newsletter for March 3rd- 7th   

This week in school we will be learning the letter Vv.  This is easy for the children!  They seem to understand it after Valentine’s Day!  Plus we have Vivian and Vinny!  The formation is simple too!  We will count the number of syllables in words.  We will practice the words on word list 16 each day. We will have homework again next week and we will have no show and tell on Thursday due to the dinosaur projects!  When I send oral reading stories home in the folder, you only have to read the most recent one---not all of them! 

In math we will be discovering many number combinations for the numbers 8, 9 and 10.  You will also see the sum in different ways. (8=4+4 or 4+4=8)   Please review skills as they come home each day.

Monday will be day number 1.  (Tuesday if we have a snow day!)  Remember, we have gym every time it is day 3.  Your child needs sneakers to be able to take gym.  We exchange library books on a day 2.

In reading we will read the story My Lucky Day.  This is an animal fantasy story.  The animals act like people!  We will focus on the comprehension skill of cause and effect! 

We celebrated Read Across America day today.  We had guest students from Bloomsburg University come to teach a lesson using a Dr. Seuss book!  I would like to invite any parent to come in to visit and read at the end of any day except a Wednesday.  (We have reading buddies on a Wednesday at the end of the day!)  This could happen any day after 2:45.  Please let me know if you are interested!  It does not have to be a Dr. Seuss book, but I do have a large collection of them if you would like to choose one!

Kindergarten News for the Week of February 24th - 28th


Kindergarten Week of February 24th – February 28th

This week in kindergarten we will be super busy.  The dinosaur reports will begin on Wednesday.  We will celebrate Dr. Seuss day on Friday.  We will finish the letter Dd in phonics this week and begin the letter Vv as in vest.  We will not have show and tell this week for the letter Dd.  We will do the dinosaur reports for the letter Dd.  You may use the template I sent or just do your own.  We will finish the dinosaur reports on Monday and Tuesday.  I’m sending home a copy of the sight words that should be known by the end of the year.  I will not be sending home all of the word lists for practice from now on.  We want to see how the children do on a “cold read” of a word list to see if they can really apply what they’ve learned and not just read what they’ve memorized.

In math we will be learning more about addition and subtraction by composing and decomposing numbers to 10.  This means finding all the combinations to add to get a number.  They can be called fact families. 

In reading we will begin a new book this week.  It is called Bunny Days. On Friday we will have students from Bloomsburg University come and teach a one hour lesson about a book.  Read Across America Day is March 2nd, but we will celebrate on Friday.  This is sometimes called Dr. Seuss’ Birthday!

Kindergarten news for February 10th - 14th


Kindergarten News for the week of February 10th – 14th   

We will have our Valentine Party on Friday- Feb 14th.  Please note this change!  Please send in your party money if you have not yet sent it!  Your child should make sure they have a valentine for everybody in our class and bring them on Monday morning.  Just in case you haven’t done the Valentine cards yet, it’s easier if you would please PRINT all names.  The children cannot read cursive writing! 

In math next week we will continue to work on subtraction.  We will take the test on subtraction toward the end of the week.  We will also complete a unit test that will test all concepts learned so far this year.  This way we can see who is retaining what’s been taught!

In phonics we will learn the letter Yy as yarn.  The sound for this letter is difficult.  Many children think the sound is /w/ not/y/ .  They confuse the sound with the pronunciation of the letter name. 

In reading next week we will continue reading the story Hide, Clyde!  We will also do some writing assignments connected with this story.

Monday is day 1 on our rotation week!  We will have the Jump Rope for heart day on Wednesday!  Children may wear gym clothes.  We have gym on Thursday!!  Please wear or bring sneakers!

These will be a PTO meeting on Monday (Feb. 10th) in our school cafeteria at 6:30 pm. 

We really enjoyed celebrating the 100th day!  It’s all down hill now!

Kindergarten news for the week of February 3rd - 7th


Kindergarten News for the week of February 3rd – 7th  

We will have our Valentine Party on Thursday- Feb 13th .  Your child should make sure they have a valentine for everybody in our class and bring them on Monday morning.  Just in case you haven’t done the Valentine cards yet, it’s easier if you would please PRINT all names.  The children cannot read cursive writing! 

In math this week we will continue to work on subtraction.  We will take about comparisons, using the minus sign and writing subtraction sentences to find differences.

In phonics we will learn the letter Ee as in elephant and equal.  Some of the concepts that will be reviewed this week are same/different words, rhyming, alphabetizing words and recognizing the /e/ when heard in words.  The sound is difficult for the letter /e/!  We will practice.   This is our last of the 5 vowels.                                                                                            In reading next week we will be reading a story Hide, Clyde!!  We will discuss camouflage and the concept of main idea. 

We learned how to make predictions this week for Groundhog day and the Super Bowl!!

Monday is day 3 on our rotation week!  We have gym!  Please wear or bring sneakers!

I’m sure you’ve seen that our PTO is having a theme basket auction on April 12th and 13th .  They are asking each homeroom to create a basket to be used as a prize.  Our theme is “I want candy!”  I am asking that each child send in a donation.  It can be as big as a bag or box of candy or as small as a pack of gum or tic tacs.  We will fill the basket and you will see it at the auction. 

Computers in education booklets will come home soon.  Please fill these out completely and return asap for a small prize.

Kindergarten news for the week of January 27th - 31st


Kindergarten News for the week of January 27th – 31st  

Next week in Phonics we will be learning the consonant letter Cc as in cat.  Show & Tell will continue next week on Thursday.   You will notice that in Phonics on your child’s spelling sound test they will now write k,c for any word beginning with /k/.  It could really be either letter so we write k, which we learned first, and then c.  We will also learn a rule that I will send home to help your child figure out which letter (k or c) a particular word starts with.  Your child should have brought home word list 10 today in their folder.  Please let me know if you didn’t get one!

·        Our 100th day is just a few school days away!!!  Please practice counting from 0-100.  We will have a great day celebrating the 100th day!

·        Report cards will be sent home on Monday.  Please sign and return as soon as possible.  If you have any questions or concerns please contact us. (570-874-3661 ext.3241)

·        Please try to keep up with our rotation days for the gym schedule.  Monday will be day 3 and we will have gym!  Children may wear boots and change into sneakers when they arrive.

·        The children really did a great job on their state reports!  I hope to finish all of them by Monday.  We all learned a lot!  The reports are on display on our bulletin board and will come home next week!

·        This week in math we will be learning about the new concept of subtraction.

·        Our next reading book will be called Seeds.  This is a nonfiction book.

·        Another event we will be learning about this week is Groundhog Day.  We will discuss making a prediction. 

Please continue to read the paper books I send home for evening reading.  These are yours to keep.  I have been noticing that some of the children need a little more practice with oral reading.  Those that don’t need practice are proud of what they can do!  Have a great weekend!

Kindergarten news for the week of January 20th - 24th


Kindergarten News for the week of January 21st – 24th  


·        Next week in Phonics we will be learning the consonant letter Zz as in zebra and zoo.  Show & Tell will be the state reports this week.  There will not be any show and tell for the letter Zz.  We will practice identifying the vowel sounds heard in words and counting the number of words heard in dictated sentences.  Please practice word list 10.

·        Our 100th day is just 10 school days away!!!  Please practice counting from 0-100 and watch for a 100th day newsletter with more information about our celebration.

Report cards are being sent home on Friday- January 24th .  Please sign and return as soon as possible.  If you have any questions or concerns please contact us.  (874-3661 ext. 3241) Keep in mind that some of the report card standards are expected to be met by the end of the year!  Don’t get upset if your child doesn’t know everything yet!  They still have half of the year to go!  This gives you an idea of what they still need to work on! 

·        Please try to keep up with our rotation days for the gym schedule.  Gym is on day 3.  Since there is no school on Monday due to a teacher inservice day, Tuesday will be day 5.  If your child wears boots to school on gym day, they may change into sneakers before gym.

·        I am really looking forward to the state reports!  We will begin our reports on Tuesday!  The reports will be on display on our bulletin board and will come home in two weeks!

·        This week in math we will be learning about addition terms, symbols and how to add numbers and sets.

·        Our next reading book will be called Farfallina and Marcel.  This story is about how animals can change.

Kindergarten News for the week of January 13th - 17th


Kindergarten News for the week of January 13th – 17th

In phonics this week we will be learning about the letter Uu as in umbrella and unicorn (underwear too)!  On Monday I will let the children pick a state for our United States report.  These will not be due until the following week (20th -24th) and more information will follow. 

In reading we will continue with the story See How We Grow! 

In math we will continue learning the process of addition.

We will be doing testing for the report cards through this week.  The children also took the dibels test yesterday and today.  It’s good to see the growth and progress the children are making!

We will have a guidance lesson on January 15th. 

Snow Days!  I did put this tip on my blog.  When we have a day of school off for an in-service day or snow, we don’t skip that day.  Let’s say it is day 1 on Monday, when we have school, and we’re off Tues. and Wed. for snow, it is still day 2 on Thursday.  They do this so the children don’t miss the same special class all of the time. 

Book orders will come home next week.

Monday will be day 5 on our rotation schedule.  We will continue to have book exchange on day 2 and gym on day 3!
