Kindergarten News for the week of March 3rd- 7th

Kindergarten Newsletter for March 3rd- 7th

This week in school we will be learning the letter Vv.  This is easy for the children!  They seem to understand it after Valentine’s Day!  Plus we have Vivian and Vinny!  The formation is simple too!  We will count the number of syllables in words.  We will practice the words on word list 16 each day. We will have homework again next week and we will have no show and tell on Thursday due to the dinosaur projects!  When I send oral reading stories home in the folder, you only have to read the most recent one---not all of them!

In math we will be discovering many number combinations for the numbers 8, 9 and 10.  You will also see the sum in different ways. (8=4+4 or 4+4=8)   Please review skills as they come home each day.

Monday will be day number 1.  (Tuesday if we have a snow day!)  Remember, we have gym every time it is day 3.  Your child needs sneakers to be able to take gym.  We exchange library books on a day 2.

In reading we will read the story My Lucky Day.  This is an animal fantasy story.  The animals act like people!  We will focus on the comprehension skill of cause and effect!

We celebrated Read Across America day today.  We had guest students from Bloomsburg University come to teach a lesson using a Dr. Seuss book!  I would like to invite any parent to come in to visit and read at the end of any day except a Wednesday.  (We have reading buddies on a Wednesday at the end of the day!)  This could happen any day after 2:45.  Please let me know if you are interested!  It does not have to be a Dr. Seuss book, but I do have a large collection of them if you would like to choose one!

Have a wonderful weekend!  As always, you can call us at school (570-874-3661 ext. 3241), set up a conference or email (atarantelli@northschuylkill.net) me about your child’s progress!

Kindergarten registration begins on Monday!

Kindergarten News for the Week of February 24th - 28th

Kindergarten Week of February 24th – February 28th

This week in kindergarten we will be super busy.  The dinosaur reports will begin on Wednesday.  We will celebrate Dr. Seuss day on Friday.  We will finish the letter Dd in phonics this week and begin the letter Vv as in vest.  We will not have show and tell this week for the letter Dd.  We will do the dinosaur reports for the letter Dd.  You may use the template I sent or just do your own.  We will finish the dinosaur reports on Monday and Tuesday.  I’m sending home a copy of the sight words that should be known by the end of the year.  I will not be sending home all of the word lists for practice from now on.  We want to see how the children do on a “cold read” of a word list to see if they can really apply what they’ve learned and not just read what they’ve memorized.

In math we will be learning more about addition and subtraction by composing and decomposing numbers to 10.  This means finding all the combinations to add to get a number.  They can be called fact families.

In reading we will begin a new book this week.  It is called Bunny Days. On Friday we will have students from Bloomsburg University come and teach a one hour lesson about a book.  Read Across America Day is March 2nd, but we will celebrate on Friday.  This is sometimes called Dr. Seuss’ Birthday!

Important dates!

Kindergarten news for February 10th - 14th

Kindergarten News for the week of February 10th – 14th

We will have our Valentine Party on Friday- Feb 14th.  Please note this change!  Please send in your party money if you have not yet sent it!  Your child should make sure they have a valentine for everybody in our class and bring them on Monday morning.  Just in case you haven’t done the Valentine cards yet, it’s easier if you would please PRINT all names.  The children cannot read cursive writing!

In math next week we will continue to work on subtraction.  We will take the test on subtraction toward the end of the week.  We will also complete a unit test that will test all concepts learned so far this year.  This way we can see who is retaining what’s been taught!

In phonics we will learn the letter Yy as yarn.  The sound for this letter is difficult.  Many children think the sound is /w/ not/y/ .  They confuse the sound with the pronunciation of the letter name.

In reading next week we will continue reading the story Hide, Clyde!  We will also do some writing assignments connected with this story.

Monday is day 1 on our rotation week!  We will have the Jump Rope for heart day on Wednesday!  Children may wear gym clothes.  We have gym on Thursday!!  Please wear or bring sneakers!

These will be a PTO meeting on Monday (Feb. 10th) in our school cafeteria at 6:30 pm.

We really enjoyed celebrating the 100th day!  It’s all down hill now!
