Kindergarten News for the week of December 3rd- 7th

Kindergarten News for the week of December  3rd – 7th

Please return your letter for Santa!  A reply should come home before Christmas!  We expect the postman next week to pick up these special letters and take them directly to Santa!  Thank you for helping your child with this fun activity!  This week we turned our own pictures into elves and reindeer!

In phonics next week we will learn the letter Rr as in rabbit and reindeer!  We will have show and tell on Thursday!

In math we will be making Shapes on a Geoboard, Describing and Comparing the Attributes of Geometric Shapes, Placing an Object on a Real Graph, Identifying Ordinal Position, Paying for Items Using Pennies, Creating, Describing, and Extending Shape Patterns.

In reading we will read the story Little Quack.  This is an animal fantasy book and we will discuss the plot of a story.  We really enjoyed the Panda cam from the SanDiego zoo.  You can check it out on your home computer.  Just google search Panda Cam.  There is also a panda cam at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C.

We will be making reindeer food, a Santa key and a Santa cookie plate.  We will have a special Polar Express day on our last school day before Christmas!  More information will follow!   The “elf on the shelf” is keeping track of everyone and reporting to Santa!

We enjoyed our “Seat Belt Program” presented by the North Central Highway Safety Organization.

Thanksgiving newsletter

Kindergarten Newsletter for the Thanksgiving Holiday Weekend

We did a lot of fun Thanksgiving activities! We made butter and corn bread in our room.  We had a “feast” with our reading buddies while we watched the Charlie Brown Thanksgiving movie.

We used colored beads to retell the story of the first Thanksgiving.

White bead-The Pilgrims sailed on a ship with tall, white sails.

Blue bead-They sailed on the blue Atlantic Ocean.

Green bead-They were so happy when they finally spied land.

Black bead-After a very hard year, they decided to celebrate and have a huge feast because they were very thankful to they were alive.  They also wanted to thank their new friends.

Red Bead-They ate cranberries.

Orange bead-They ate pumpkin pie.

Yellow bead-They ate corn.

Brown bead-And of course, they ate turkey!

I hope the children enjoy retelling the story!

In phonics we will begin the letter Ff and show and tell will be on Thursday as usual.  I will also test word list 5 on Friday.

In math we will name shapes using 2 attributes, copy AB and ABB patterns and begin working with geoboards.

In reading we will begin the story Little Panda. This is an informational text and we will learn the comprehension skill compare and contrast.

Have a wonderful holiday weekend!  We will return to school on day 3 of our rotation.  We do not exchange gifts among the children for Christmas.  Sometimes that question comes up because some of the upper grades do exchange!  We have found that some children get upset with what they get and it causes a problem.

Have a restful Thanksgiving break and happy hunting to all you bargain hunters and real hunters too!

Kindergarten week of November 12th

Kindergarten News for the week of November 12th – 16th
In phonics we will be learning the letter Ss as in sun.  We will still have show and tell on Thursday.  Look for the list in your child’s folder that contains the sight words that we’ve learned so far this year!  You may want to practice if your child is struggling with these.  We do review them daily in class!
I hope you were happy with your child’s progress on his/her report card.  Please feel free to contact me any time with any questions or concerns. (874-4284 ext. 3241)  You can also set up a conference at any time!
In math we will be ordering money amounts up to 10 cents and writing money amounts to 10 cents. Next, we will be identifying an object that doesn’t belong to a group of objects.  We will solve a problem by acting it out.  We will match sets of objects to numbers.  Lastly, we will copy patterns and identify AB patterns.
You can send your recipe for the PTO cookbook to nseptorecipes@yahoo.com .  The email was not clear on the sheet that is coming home today!
Please practice word list 4.  This will be the last list that will be tested before Thanksgiving!  I will send home word list 5 before the holiday!
The new reading book for this week is called Whose Garden is it?  This story is a rhyming story and we will discuss the comprehension skill of reality and fantasy.

Kindergarten News for the week of November 5th – 9th

This weekend ends Daylight Savings Time.  Remember to turn your clocks back one hour on Saturday night. (Spring forward—Fall back!)

Next week in phonics we will continue learning about the letter Mm as in monkey.  We will also begin to learn the letter Ii as in inch.  Even though the formation is easy, the sound is difficult.  You can see how your child did on their second word list test.  Word list 3 is in their folder to practice for next week.  Your child may grow a mustache by the end of Monday!

In math this week we will be learning more about acting out story problems using pennies, identifying time to the hour, identifying ordinal numbers to fourth and identifying numbers that are before, after or in between.  We are continuing to do the calendar using an ABB pattern for November.  We are counting up to 50 this week!

In November we will be learning about Pilgrims and Indians as well as Thanksgiving.

I’m looking forward to seeing and talking to many parents at our parent/teacher conferences on Tuesday and by phone!  The children will be so excited that we were in touch with each other!
