Kindergarten news for the week of February 25th - March 1st

Kindergarten News for the week of February 25th – March 1st
This week in phonics we will be learning the letter Jj as in jar.  We will be identifying the vowel sounds heard in words.  They will begin a new take-home reader called Pig’s Jet.  We will begin to discuss what an accent is and how to find it in a word.  I will test word list 16.  For “Jj” show and tell this week your child can bring an item or they can learn a joke.  (Joke begins with “j” and kindergarten children really enjoy telling jokes!)
In math this week we will be making an ABBC pattern with pattern blocks, divide by sharing, comparing numbers through 10, identifying left and right, and beginning to explore tangrams.
In reading this week we will read the story Max Takes the Train. The main character of this book is Max, from Max and Ruby.  This is an animal fantasy book.  We will review the comprehension skill of realism vs. fantasy.
We will be having a visitor from Bloomsburg University teach us a lesson for Read Across America day! (Dr. Seuss’s Birthday!)  We will also have guest readers.  Ask your child if they remember any of our readers.  In March we will be learning about St. Patrick’s day, reading some leprechaun stories and Irish tall tales.
The children did a really great job doing their dinosaur projects!  They will hang in the hall for a few more days.  We also did a dinosaur kidwriting story.
You may notice sentences that the children have been writing on their phonics pages.  They began this by copying sentences from the board.  Next, I dictated sentences and they wrote them the best that they could.  Now, the children choose one of the high frequency words and write their own sentence!  I can really see progress!  In the next few weeks the children will be reading stories and giving their opinions about what they’ve read.

kindergarten week of February 18th - 22nd

Kindergarten Newsletter for February 19th – 22nd
This week in school we will be learning the letter Vv.  This is easy for the children!  They seem to understand it after Valentine’s Day!  The formation is simple too!  We will count the number of syllables in words.  We will practice the words on word list 14 each day. We will have homework again next week and we will have no show and tell on Thursday due to the dinosaur projects!  When I send oral reading stories home in the yellow folder, you only have to read the most recent one---not all of them!  I’ve had some questions!
In math we will be paying for items up to 50 cents using nickels.  This is difficult if your child can’t count by 5’s to 50!  We practice this every day in class.  If you see your child struggling, you may want to practice at home as well!  We will divide by sharing, identify and order numbers and compare sets of objects.  We will compare numbers up to 10.  Please review skills as they come home each day.
Tuesday will be day number 1.  Remember, we have gym every time it is day 3.  Your child needs sneakers to be able to take gym.
In reading we will finish Unit 4 reading a story called Abuela.  This is a fictional story about a girl and her grandmother going on an adventure flying around the city.  We will again learn the term setting.
We will celebrate Read Across America day on Friday March 1st  .  We will have guest students from Bloomsburg University come to teach a lesson using a Dr. Seuss book!  I would like to invite any parent to come in to visit and read at the end of any day except a Wednesday.  (We have reading buddies on a Wednesday at the end of the day!)  This could happen any day after 2:45.  Please let me know if you are interested!  It does not have to be a Dr. Seuss book, but I do have a large collection of them if you would like to choose one!
Have a wonderful long weekend!  As always, you can call me at school (570-874-3661 ext. 3241) , set up a conference or email (atarantelli@northschuylkill.net) me about your child’s progress!
