Kindergarten news for the week of December 17th - 21st

Kindergarten News for the week of December 17th - 21st
The Christmas concert for our kindergarten children is on Monday morning (December 17th ) in the high school auditorium.  The children should wear dressy Christmas clothing or dress code appropriate clothing.    Monday will be day 2 on our rotation schedule.
I will test word list 8 on the Friday when we return after Christmas.   We will also take the second session of the dibels test after we return from our Christmas break.  In the winter (January) your child will complete the following assessments for DIBELS: First Sound Fluency, Letter Naming Fluency, Phoneme Segmentation, and Nonsense Word Fluency.  There are two more assessments, which have been added. The first is Phoneme Segmentation, which does not require any materials. This is an advanced skill of First Sound Fluency by moving from the first sound of a word to the middle and ending sounds of a word. For example, if I would say the word "cat," and your child would segment it by saying the sounds /c/ /a/ /t/.

The final assessment in winter is Nonsense Word Fluency. This sounds complicated, but it is quite simple. The children are shown a three letter make believe word to read. For example, the child might see "mav" and the child would have to read it by saying the sounds /m/ /a/ /v/ or reading the whole word "mav."
In phonics we will be learning the letter Bb.  We will not have show and tell on Thursday.  If I ever forget to send a bag home, a grocery bag would be fine.
In math we will practice counting to 50 by 10’s and practice paying for items in 10 cent increments.  In reading we will not be starting a new story!
Please continue to dress your child for the weather!  We go outside every day that it is possible.  Hats and gloves make their time outside more enjoyable.  Also some of the children have been asking to put on their coats in our classroom because they are cold.  I am wearing 2 layers myself every day because the large blower makes our room feel cold!  You may want to send a dress code appropriate sweater or hoodless sweatshirt for your child’s cubby!
We have learned the letters L,O,G,H,T,P,A,N,M,I,S,F,R and K.  Your child should recognize these (capital and lowercase letters) and know the corresponding sound.  They should be able to read all sight words taught, recognize numbers to 20, and recognize the penny, nickel and dime and name their value.  Your child will be asked to name time to the hour and recognize rhyme by saying if 2 words given rhyme.  They should also be able to tell a rhyming word that rhymes with a word given by me!
Please note that Friday- December 21st is a half day of school and that will also be our Polar Express day!  (Children may wear pajamas.)
Please continue to call me with any questions or concerns!  My school phone number is 874-3661-ext. 3241.  Next week will be a little crazy!  We will not be coloring our behavior chart!!

Kindergarten Newsletter for the Week of December 10th – 14th
Next week in phonics we will be learning the letter Kk as in kite.  We will have show and tell on Thursday!  We will learn “k” now and in several weeks we will learn the letter “Cc”.  On the spelling sound test we will write k,c since they share the same sound.  Your child was tested on word list 6 today.  Word list 7 is in your child’s folder to practice for the next week.  Please help your child each day for a few minutes.  If the entire list is too much try half of the list each day.. The sight words should be easy.  We practice these daily in our decks!
In math, we will be copying line segments, shapes and designs on a geoboard, estimating collections, counting by 10’s, identifying and learning about dimes, identifying, creating and extending ABB sound and movement patterns.
The Kindergarten Christmas program for the parents will be at the high school at 9:30 on Monday- December 17th.
In reading next week we will read the story See How We Grow.   This story is a biography about twin girls.  Just for fun, this week we would like to see a baby picture of each child in our class to see how they’ve changed.  (Birth to one year)  Please send it in with your child’s name on the back and in a baggie.  We will also be learning about the comprehension skill of cause and effect.
Monday will be day 2 on the rotation schedule.  Please remember that gym day is day 3 on our schedule.  Please wear sneakers.
The list of our sight words is growing!  I will attach a list that you may want to practice.  These will help your child to read the little take-home stories better!
We would like to thank Eric Hughes, the postman, for taking time out of his busy schedule  to come to visit us and deliver our important letter to Santa!

Thanksgiving newsletter

Kindergarten Newsletter for the Thanksgiving Holiday Weekend

We did a lot of fun Thanksgiving activities! We made butter and corn bread in our room.  We had a “feast” with our reading buddies while we watched the Charlie Brown Thanksgiving movie.

We used colored beads to retell the story of the first Thanksgiving.

White bead-The Pilgrims sailed on a ship with tall, white sails.

Blue bead-They sailed on the blue Atlantic Ocean.

Green bead-They were so happy when they finally spied land.

Black bead-After a very hard year, they decided to celebrate and have a huge feast because they were very thankful to they were alive.  They also wanted to thank their new friends.

Red Bead-They ate cranberries.

Orange bead-They ate pumpkin pie.

Yellow bead-They ate corn.

Brown bead-And of course, they ate turkey!

I hope the children enjoy retelling the story!

In phonics we will begin the letter Ff and show and tell will be on Thursday as usual.  I will also test word list 5 on Friday.

In math we will name shapes using 2 attributes, copy AB and ABB patterns and begin working with geoboards.

In reading we will begin the story Little Panda. This is an informational text and we will learn the comprehension skill compare and contrast.

Have a wonderful holiday weekend!  We will return to school on day 3 of our rotation.  We do not exchange gifts among the children for Christmas.  Sometimes that question comes up because some of the upper grades do exchange!  We have found that some children get upset with what they get and it causes a problem.

Have a restful Thanksgiving break and happy hunting to all you bargain hunters and real hunters too!
