Mrs Tarantelli's news for the week of March 18th!!

Mrs. Tarantelli’s Kindergarten News for the week of March 18th – 22nd
Phonics- We will be learning our last letter next week.  It is the letter Qq as in quilt.  We will have the girls be “queen for a day” on Tuesday and we will celebrate the wedding of “Q” and “U” the following week!  I will send home another note to let you know the date.  Dressing up is optional for both days!  Sometimes the children dressed for the wedding as if they were going to a wedding!  (They’ll never forget that Q and U go together!)
Math- We will continue learning about numbers and work mainly with the numbers 20-30. We will discuss 2- and 3- dimensional shapes, review coins learned already and begin to learn about the quarter and dollar.
Reading- This week in reading we will be learning skills by using the book The Little Engine that Could.  We will watch the movie at the end of the week!
In Science we will continue learning about wood and paper.
FYI- The Easter Bunny is coming to the Ashland Boyers on Saturday- March 16th from 11-3. A special treat will be given.  We are doing an Easter coloring contest in class for there also.
We are testing for report cards!  Our year is flying!
We will be watching the third grade parade on Monday- March 18th.  The children may wear green if they wish!
I sent home a form for graduation picture orders today.  Please let me know if you did not get one!  Monday is day number 5 on our rotation schedule.

Kindergarten news for the week of March 4th- 8th

Kindergarten News for the week of March 4th  – 8th
Next week we will be working on the letter Xx as in the end of fox and beginning of x-ray.  Students will go on a treasure hunt throughout the building to find the “X” that marks the spot of their hidden treasure!  This treasure hunt will be next week due to kindergarten registration.  We don’t want the parents and new k students to see the current children flying through the halls on their hunt!  How exciting!!!  There will be NO Show and Tell.
I hope you enjoyed the newspaper activities this week!  Please send in my ad for a small treat!  A separate note was sent home about this.  My ad can be found in the classified section of the Pottsville Republican and Evening Herald
In reading this week we will read the story Mayday! Mayday!.  This is an informational text.  We will discuss cause and effect.  Continue to read the little books I send home for fluency practice.
Next week we will have our kindergarten registration at NSE.  Please call the school office for an appointment if your child will be five by September 1st and you wish to enroll them in kindergarten.
In kidwriting the children are beginning to attempt to write 2 or more sentences on their own each day!  This is scary for some children but some took right off with it!
In math we will work with tangram pieces, identify small and large shapes, begin to measure length, graph a picture on a pictograph and explore slides, flips and turns with shapes.
***Please remember that gym is always on DAY 3---wear sneakers!
Monday will be day 5 on our rotation schedule.
***Library day is always on day 2!  Please help your child locate his/her book so they can get a new book each week!
I have mixed feelings about telling you that I will not be in school next Thursday and Friday.  I am lucky enough to be able to go to the PA Kindergarten Teachers Conference in Harrisburg.  Three teachers will be going from our kindergarten.  It is fabulous and we always come home with new and exciting ideas.   Please reassure your child that if my ad is in the newspaper one of these two days, they will get their treat when I return!  I will have everything laid out for the 2 days and the children will be in the very capable hands of Mrs. McCormick

Kindergarten news for the week of February 25th - March 1st

Kindergarten News for the week of February 25th – March 1st
This week in phonics we will be learning the letter Jj as in jar.  We will be identifying the vowel sounds heard in words.  They will begin a new take-home reader called Pig’s Jet.  We will begin to discuss what an accent is and how to find it in a word.  I will test word list 16.  For “Jj” show and tell this week your child can bring an item or they can learn a joke.  (Joke begins with “j” and kindergarten children really enjoy telling jokes!)
In math this week we will be making an ABBC pattern with pattern blocks, divide by sharing, comparing numbers through 10, identifying left and right, and beginning to explore tangrams.
In reading this week we will read the story Max Takes the Train. The main character of this book is Max, from Max and Ruby.  This is an animal fantasy book.  We will review the comprehension skill of realism vs. fantasy.
We will be having a visitor from Bloomsburg University teach us a lesson for Read Across America day! (Dr. Seuss’s Birthday!)  We will also have guest readers.  Ask your child if they remember any of our readers.  In March we will be learning about St. Patrick’s day, reading some leprechaun stories and Irish tall tales.
The children did a really great job doing their dinosaur projects!  They will hang in the hall for a few more days.  We also did a dinosaur kidwriting story.
You may notice sentences that the children have been writing on their phonics pages.  They began this by copying sentences from the board.  Next, I dictated sentences and they wrote them the best that they could.  Now, the children choose one of the high frequency words and write their own sentence!  I can really see progress!  In the next few weeks the children will be reading stories and giving their opinions about what they’ve read.

kindergarten week of February 18th - 22nd

Kindergarten Newsletter for February 19th – 22nd
This week in school we will be learning the letter Vv.  This is easy for the children!  They seem to understand it after Valentine’s Day!  The formation is simple too!  We will count the number of syllables in words.  We will practice the words on word list 14 each day. We will have homework again next week and we will have no show and tell on Thursday due to the dinosaur projects!  When I send oral reading stories home in the yellow folder, you only have to read the most recent one---not all of them!  I’ve had some questions!
In math we will be paying for items up to 50 cents using nickels.  This is difficult if your child can’t count by 5’s to 50!  We practice this every day in class.  If you see your child struggling, you may want to practice at home as well!  We will divide by sharing, identify and order numbers and compare sets of objects.  We will compare numbers up to 10.  Please review skills as they come home each day.
Tuesday will be day number 1.  Remember, we have gym every time it is day 3.  Your child needs sneakers to be able to take gym.
In reading we will finish Unit 4 reading a story called Abuela.  This is a fictional story about a girl and her grandmother going on an adventure flying around the city.  We will again learn the term setting.
We will celebrate Read Across America day on Friday March 1st  .  We will have guest students from Bloomsburg University come to teach a lesson using a Dr. Seuss book!  I would like to invite any parent to come in to visit and read at the end of any day except a Wednesday.  (We have reading buddies on a Wednesday at the end of the day!)  This could happen any day after 2:45.  Please let me know if you are interested!  It does not have to be a Dr. Seuss book, but I do have a large collection of them if you would like to choose one!
Have a wonderful long weekend!  As always, you can call me at school (570-874-3661 ext. 3241) , set up a conference or email (atarantelli@northschuylkill.net) me about your child’s progress!

Your child may need a glue stick or box of crayons for school!  You can check with them!
