Kindergarten news for the week of January 8th

Kindergarten Newsletter for the week of January 8th – 12th
·         The second marking period will be ending on January 18th and we will be testing for report cards.  Students will be asked to write correctly their first and last names, numbers 0-10, and capital and lowercase letters learned (a, b, f, g, h, i, k, l, m, n, o, p, r, s, and t).  They will need to identify capital and lowercase letters and sounds, numbers 0-10, count orally to 100, basic shapes, and rhyming words.  Students will be asked to blend 2, 3, and 4 letter words and read some already learned high- frequency sight words.  Please take some time to review these skills with your child.  Report cards will be sent home shortly after the end of the marking period

·         There will be a monthly PTO Meeting on Tuesday-January 8th. Parents are invited and encouraged to attend! Students will receive their blue North Schuylkill Elementary T-shirts as a gift from the PTO!  Some classes have already received theirs, but they ran out of some of the smaller sizes and had to place another order.  Students are welcome to wear their shirts for Spirit Days or gym days, however we are asking that parents keep in mind the T-shirts will be needed for class field trips.  Please keep them on hand for such events!  (Keep in mind that if your child’s shirt is lost or damaged, parents will be responsible for purchasing a new one.)

·         In phonics next week we will learn the letter Uu as in umbrella and unicorn.  Please see the attached state project for “U” for United States.  There will be no “U” show and tell.

·         In math we will be comparing sets of objects, comparing numbers through 6, weighing objects and ordering objects by weight, adding sets and using numbers to describe how many objects are in a set.

·         In reading this week we will be continuing with our book Seeds.

·         Monday will be day number 4 on our rotation schedule.

·         We will be taking the dibels test either on Tuesday or Wednesday.  I will only let you know if the results were not as good as they should be for this time of the year.  We should know the results in a few weeks.

·         I will send the January book orders home next week!

Kindergarten news for the week of December 17th - 21st

Kindergarten News for the week of December 17th - 21st
The Christmas concert for our kindergarten children is on Monday morning (December 17th ) in the high school auditorium.  The children should wear dressy Christmas clothing or dress code appropriate clothing.    Monday will be day 2 on our rotation schedule.
I will test word list 8 on the Friday when we return after Christmas.   We will also take the second session of the dibels test after we return from our Christmas break.  In the winter (January) your child will complete the following assessments for DIBELS: First Sound Fluency, Letter Naming Fluency, Phoneme Segmentation, and Nonsense Word Fluency.  There are two more assessments, which have been added. The first is Phoneme Segmentation, which does not require any materials. This is an advanced skill of First Sound Fluency by moving from the first sound of a word to the middle and ending sounds of a word. For example, if I would say the word "cat," and your child would segment it by saying the sounds /c/ /a/ /t/.

The final assessment in winter is Nonsense Word Fluency. This sounds complicated, but it is quite simple. The children are shown a three letter make believe word to read. For example, the child might see "mav" and the child would have to read it by saying the sounds /m/ /a/ /v/ or reading the whole word "mav."
In phonics we will be learning the letter Bb.  We will not have show and tell on Thursday.  If I ever forget to send a bag home, a grocery bag would be fine.
In math we will practice counting to 50 by 10’s and practice paying for items in 10 cent increments.  In reading we will not be starting a new story!
Please continue to dress your child for the weather!  We go outside every day that it is possible.  Hats and gloves make their time outside more enjoyable.  Also some of the children have been asking to put on their coats in our classroom because they are cold.  I am wearing 2 layers myself every day because the large blower makes our room feel cold!  You may want to send a dress code appropriate sweater or hoodless sweatshirt for your child’s cubby!
We have learned the letters L,O,G,H,T,P,A,N,M,I,S,F,R and K.  Your child should recognize these (capital and lowercase letters) and know the corresponding sound.  They should be able to read all sight words taught, recognize numbers to 20, and recognize the penny, nickel and dime and name their value.  Your child will be asked to name time to the hour and recognize rhyme by saying if 2 words given rhyme.  They should also be able to tell a rhyming word that rhymes with a word given by me!
Please note that Friday- December 21st is a half day of school and that will also be our Polar Express day!  (Children may wear pajamas.)
Please continue to call me with any questions or concerns!  My school phone number is 874-3661-ext. 3241.  Next week will be a little crazy!  We will not be coloring our behavior chart!!

kindergarten news for the week of December 10th - 14th

Kindergarten Newsletter for the Week of December 10th – 14th
Next week in phonics we will be learning the letter Kk as in kite.  We will have show and tell on Thursday!  We will learn “k” now and in several weeks we will learn the letter “Cc”.  On the spelling sound test we will write k,c since they share the same sound.  Your child was tested on word list 6 today.  Word list 7 is in your child’s folder to practice for the next week.  Please help your child each day for a few minutes.  If the entire list is too much try half of the list each day.. The sight words should be easy.  We practice these daily in our decks!
In math, we will be copying line segments, shapes and designs on a geoboard, estimating collections, counting by 10’s, identifying and learning about dimes, identifying, creating and extending ABB sound and movement patterns.
The Kindergarten Christmas program for the parents will be at the high school at 9:30 on Monday- December 17th.
In reading next week we will read the story See How We Grow.   This story is a biography about twin girls.  Just for fun, this week we would like to see a baby picture of each child in our class to see how they’ve changed.  (Birth to one year)  Please send it in with your child’s name on the back and in a baggie.  We will also be learning about the comprehension skill of cause and effect.
Monday will be day 2 on the rotation schedule.  Please remember that gym day is day 3 on our schedule.  Please wear sneakers.
The list of our sight words is growing!  I will attach a list that you may want to practice.  These will help your child to read the little take-home stories better!
We would like to thank Eric Hughes, the postman, for taking time out of his busy schedule  to come to visit us and deliver our important letter to Santa!
