Kindergarten News for the week of February 3^rd – 7^th  

We will have our Valentine Party on Thursday- Feb 13^th .  Your child should make sure they have a valentine for everybody in our class and bring them on Monday morning.  Just in case you haven’t done the Valentine cards yet, it’s easier if you would please PRINT all names.  The children cannot read cursive writing! 

In math this week we will continue to work on subtraction.  We will take about comparisons, using the minus sign and writing subtraction sentences to find differences.

In phonics we will learn the letter Ee as in elephant and equal.  Some of the concepts that will be reviewed this week are same/different words, rhyming, alphabetizing words and recognizing the /e/ when heard in words.  The sound is difficult for the letter /e/!  We will practice.   This is our last of the 5 vowels.                                                                                            In reading next week we will be reading a story Hide, Clyde!!  We will discuss camouflage and the concept of main idea. 

We learned how to make predictions this week for Groundhog day and the Super Bowl!!

Monday is day 3 on our rotation week!  We have gym!  Please wear or bring sneakers!

I’m sure you’ve seen that our PTO is having a theme basket auction on April 12^th and 13^th .  They are asking each homeroom to create a basket to be used as a prize.  Our theme is “I want candy!”  I am asking that each child send in a donation.  It can be as big as a bag or box of candy or as small as a pack of gum or tic tacs.  We will fill the basket and you will see it at the auction. 

Computers in education booklets will come home soon.  Please fill these out completely and return asap for a small prize.

Kindergarten News for the week of January 27^th – 31^st  

Next week in Phonics we will be learning the consonant letter Cc as in cat.  Show & Tell will continue next week on Thursday.   You will notice that in Phonics on your child’s spelling sound test they will now write k,c for any word beginning with /k/.  It could really be either letter so we write k, which we learned first, and then c.  We will also learn a rule that I will send home to help your child figure out which letter (k or c) a particular word starts with.  Your child should have brought home word list 10 today in their folder.  Please let me know if you didn’t get one!

·        Our 100^th day is just a few school days away!!!  Please practice counting from 0-100.  We will have a great day celebrating the 100^th day!

·        Report cards will be sent home on Monday.  Please sign and return as soon as possible.  If you have any questions or concerns please contact us. (570-874-3661 ext.3241)

·        Please try to keep up with our rotation days for the gym schedule.  Monday will be day 3 and we will have gym!  Children may wear boots and change into sneakers when they arrive.

·        The children really did a great job on their state reports!  I hope to finish all of them by Monday.  We all learned a lot!  The reports are on display on our bulletin board and will come home next week!

·        This week in math we will be learning about the new concept of subtraction.

·        Our next reading book will be called Seeds.  This is a nonfiction book.

·        Another event we will be learning about this week is Groundhog Day.  We will discuss making a prediction. 

Please continue to read the paper books I send home for evening reading.  These are yours to keep.  I have been noticing that some of the children need a little more practice with oral reading.  Those that don’t need practice are proud of what they can do!  Have a great weekend!

Kindergarten News for the week of January 21^st – 24^th  

·        Next week in Phonics we will be learning the consonant letter Zz as in zebra and zoo.  Show & Tell will be the state reports this week.  There will not be any show and tell for the letter Zz.  We will practice identifying the vowel sounds heard in words and counting the number of words heard in dictated sentences.  Please practice word list 10.

·        Our 100^th day is just 10 school days away!!!  Please practice counting from 0-100 and watch for a 100^th day newsletter with more information about our celebration.

Report cards are being sent home on Friday- January 24^th .  Please sign and return as soon as possible.  If you have any questions or concerns please contact us.  (874-3661 ext. 3241) Keep in mind that some of the report card standards are expected to be met by the end of the year!  Don’t get upset if your child doesn’t know everything yet!  They still have half of the year to go!  This gives you an idea of what they still need to work on! 

·        Please try to keep up with our rotation days for the gym schedule.  Gym is on day 3.  Since there is no school on Monday due to a teacher inservice day, Tuesday will be day 5.  If your child wears boots to school on gym day, they may change into sneakers before gym.

·        I am really looking forward to the state reports!  We will begin our reports on Tuesday!  The reports will be on display on our bulletin board and will come home in two weeks!

·        This week in math we will be learning about addition terms, symbols and how to add numbers and sets.

·        Our next reading book will be called Farfallina and Marcel.  This story is about how animals can change.

Kindergarten News for the week of January 13^th – 17^th

In phonics this week we will be learning about the letter Uu as in umbrella and unicorn (underwear too)!  On Monday I will let the children pick a state for our United States report.  These will not be due until the following week (20^th -24^th) and more information will follow. 

In reading we will continue with the story See How We Grow! 

In math we will continue learning the process of addition.

We will be doing testing for the report cards through this week.  The children also took the dibels test yesterday and today.  It’s good to see the growth and progress the children are making!

We will have a guidance lesson on January 15^th. 

Snow Days!  I did put this tip on my blog.  When we have a day of school off for an in-service day or snow, we don’t skip that day.  Let’s say it is day 1 on Monday, when we have school, and we’re off Tues. and Wed. for snow, it is still day 2 on Thursday.  They do this so the children don’t miss the same special class all of the time. 

Book orders will come home next week.

Monday will be day 5 on our rotation schedule.  We will continue to have book exchange on day 2 and gym on day 3!

Kindergarten News for the week of December 16^th – 20^th   

 

We will take the second session of the dibels test after we return from our Christmas break.  In the Winter (January) your child will complete the following assessments for DIBELS: First Sound Fluency, Letter Naming Fluency, Phoneme Segmentation, and Nonsense Word Fluency.  There are two more assessments, which have been added. The first is Phoneme Segmentation, which does not require any materials. This is an advanced skill of First Sound Fluency by moving from the first sound of a word to the middle and ending sounds of a word. For example, if I would say the word "cat," and your child would segment it by saying the sounds /c/ /a/ /t/.
The final assessment in Winter is Nonsense Word Fluency. This sounds complicated, but it is quite simple. The children are shown a three letter make believe word to read. For example, the child might see "mav" and the child would have to read it by saying the sounds /m/ /a/ /v/ or reading the whole word "mav."

We will not begin a new letter before we leave for Christmas break.  In phonics we will be learning the letter Bb when we return after the holidays.  I will test word list 7 next week.  I will test word list 8 on the Friday when we return after Christmas.  

In math we will review counting and recognizing numbers to 100 and counting by 1’s, 2’s and 10’s to 100. 

In reading we will not be starting a new story!  We will finish activities with Little Quack.

Please continue to dress your child for the weather!  We go outside every day that it is possible.  Hats and gloves make their time outside more enjoyable.  Also some of the children have been asking to put on their coats in our classroom because they are cold.  I am wearing 2 layers myself every day because the large blower makes our room feel cold!  You may want to send a dress code appropriate sweater or hoodless sweatshirt for your child’s cubby!

We have learned the letters L,O,G,H,T,P,A,N,M,I,S,F,R and K.  Your child should recognize these (capital and lowercase letters) and know the corresponding sound.  They should be able to read all sight words taught and recognize numbers to 100.  Your child will be asked to recognize rhyme by saying if 2 words said to them rhyme.  They should also be able to tell a rhyming word that rhymes with a word given by me!

Please note that Friday- December 20^th is a half day of school and that will also be our Polar Express day!  (Children may wear pajamas.)

Kindergarten News for the week of December 9^th  – 13^th      

Yesterday we mailed our letters to Santa!  A reply should come home before Christmas!  Thank you for helping your child with this fun activity!

We have a super busy week ahead of us!  We are collecting donations for the military.  Santa may visit our room soon!  Our elf on the shelf, Frosty is keeping us entertained!

Friday- December 13^th -Trip to high school to see the elementary band and chorus concert!  That is also the PTO movie night.  Please return the paper that is your child’s folder today if you are interested in attending.

In phonics next week we will learn the letter Kk as in kite!  We will have show and tell on Thursday!  This will be the last letter we learn before Christmas.  The boys will be kings one day and wear crowns!  We will learn Bb when we return from the holiday break.

In math we will be learning about numbers to 100 and beginning to count by 10’s, 5’s and 2’s.

We will read the story Little Quack.  We really enjoyed the Panda cam from the SanDiego zoo.  You can check it out on your home computer.  Just google search Panda Cam.

We will be making reindeer food and a Santa cookie plate.  We will have a special Polar Express day before Christmas!  A note is in your child’s backpack.   We will not be exchanging gifts in our classroom from one child to another child or with our reading buddies.  It won’t be long now!

There is no breakfast that day.  They will start serving LUNCH at 9:00. 

We will have gym class on Wednesday!!

                  

We will not be learning a new letter next week.  We will begin the letter Rr when we return after Thanksgiving!  We do have a new word list -#6!  Word list #6 will not be tested until the Friday after Thanksgiving.   I tested word list 5.

 

In math we will be reviewing the numbers up to 20.  The children need to recognize them and be able to count that many correctly.

 

We will be visiting our reading buddies and watching Charlie Brown’s Thanksgiving with them next week!  We will also make a turkey craft with them.  We will also be making butter and baking corn bread!  We will be learning about pilgrims and Native Americans next week.  We will make necklaces, headdresses and vests.

 

Monday is day #1 on our rotation schedule.

 

Please continue to send a snack and a drink with your child each day!  You may replace your child’s folder if it is badly torn.  They are just 3 prong folders from Walmart that I purchased in the summer.
