Week of Graduation, field trip and carnival!!

Kindergarten News for the week of May 21^st – 25^th Monday(May 21^st) is day 1

In phonics we will learn combinations er and or.  We will also introduce a vccv rule.

In reading we will read the story The Night Worker.

Tuesday evening will be our big graduation!  It will be held at our high school auditorium at 6:00.  Students should report by 5:30 to the gym to dress in caps and gowns.  Children should again wear a white collared shirt.  Girls are reminded not to wear big hair accessories so the cap fits properly.  My class will stand in the center of the stage.

Please return all DVD orders by Wednesday- May 23rd.

Thursday is our field trip to Hershey!  We can’t wait!

Friday is our PTO carnival.  Please dress your child to be out all day.  Students should wear sneakers.   (No dresses or skirts for the girls please!)  They will be in bouncers /on bikes etc. Sunscreen should be applied at home.   The only lunch for that day is a deli hoagie.  There will be no alternates.

We will practice on Monday and Tuesday morning for graduation.  Please try to have your child at school on time for this so they can be ready to walk over after announcements with the class.  Please dress your child for the weather!   Comfortable shoes would be great!

Due to the carnival, Friday is not a number day in our rotation schedule.  Tuesday –May 29^th will be Day 5 due the carnival and not having school on Memorial Day!

Kindergarten News for the week of April 16^th

• Next week in Phonics we will learn the digraph ck as in duck.  Show & Tell can be any item that has the digraph ck as part of the word (for example; truck, black, chicken, etc…).  Please send it on Thursday.  Our next sound will be sh as in shark.  Please continue to practice the word lists and the take home readers for fluency!  You can also continue to help your child practice writing words on their own for 10 minutes.  You can give them hints while they are working, ex. Yes, no, mom, dad, up etc.

• In reading this week we will be reading a story called On the Move.  This is an informational text and the children will learn about how people in different parts of the world travel.

• You may notice that your child is beginning to get some wrong on their spelling sound test.  They need to code the vowels properly now.  Short vowels are coded with a breve and long vowels are coded with a macron.   I am also dictating sentences to them and they have to write the words I say.  I also stress a capital letter at the beginning and a period at the end!

• In math this week we will be studying identifying and matching equivalent sets and identifying doubles, acting out some, some more stories, solving problems by guessing and checking, and drawing pictures for some, some more stories.

FYI:  Kindergarten Graduation will be held on Tuesday, May 22nd  Please mark your calendars.

The 4^th and last marking period has now begun—less than 33 school days left until summer vacation!!

Kindergarten week of April 2nd-4th

Kindergarten News for the week of April 2^nd – 4^th

On Tuesday we will celebrate the wedding of Q and U!  We’re looking forward to that!  A small reception will follow! 

We will have our Easter party  Wednesday .   The children can’t wait for our mini egg hunt!

We have finished learning all of the letters, but we still have much to learn!  Next week we will learn the long vowel rule.  (If a vowel is not followed by a consonant, the vowel is long and it is coded with a macron.  Examples are: a, hi, me so)  We will continue this after Easter!

In math we will be learning about tangrams , identifying largest and smallest shapes, identifying and covering half of a shape, paying for items using pennies, nickels , dimes or a quarter.

We are continuing to learn about wood and paper in science.  The children are really enjoying this!  Next we will learn about Animals two by two.

In reading we will read a story called On the Move.  This is a informational text and we will focus on the comprehension skill of main idea.   Sometimes I call it the big idea!

We are now in the last marking period and the time will fly by until the end of the year!  If you have questions or concerns about your child’s report card or their progress, please call me at school anytime between 7:45 and 3:45.  (874-3661 ext. 3241)

We are looking forward to the wedding of Q and U and hopefully everyone will remember that Q and U are stuck like glue!

Kindergarten week of March 26th - 30th

Kindergarten News for the week of March 26^th – 30^th

Phonics- We will be learning our last letter of the alphabet next week.  It is the letter Qq as in quilt.  We will have the girls be “queen for a day” on Thursday- March 29^th and we will celebrate the wedding of “Q” and “U” on the Tuesday before Easter.  Dressing up is optional for both days!  Sometimes the children dressed for the wedding as if they were going to a wedding!  (They’ll never forget that Q and U go together!)

Math- We will concentrate on learning the numbers 11-30, use tangrams and work with coins and shapes.

Reading- We will read a classic story The Little Engine that Could.   We will also learn the comprehension skill of setting and know that this book is fiction. 

Report cards came home today.  Please return them as soon as possible.

In Science we will continue to learn about wood and paper.

Easter will be here soon!

March 27th 2012

Please don't forget that our graduation pictures are on FRIDAY- March 30th!!!
Money is due at that time!  Also, the girls may dress like queens on Thursday of this week!!

Kindergarten week of March 19th - 23rd

Kindergarten News

v Next week we will be working on the letter Ww and its sound as in wagon and watermelon.  Review identifying and writing letters learned.  Also practice blending letters in three, four, and five letter words.  We will have Show & Tell on Thursday.

v To go along with our letter Ww, we will have Wacky Hair Day on Friday, March 23^rd .  Start thinking about a wacky hairstyle for the day.  Remember boys with short hair can always wear WIGS—they are wacky too!!!

v In reading our story will be Messenger, Messenger!  It is about a bike delivery person that works in a city.

v Wednesday, March 21^st will be WATERY WEDNESDAY in Kindergarten.  We will be talking about water and completing different experiments involving water throughout the day.  It will be WONDERFUL!

v As a theme for the week we will be discussing different kinds of weather.  Maybe we will even have a future meteorologist in our midst!

v In Math we will be working with measurement.  We’ll be comparing, ordering, and measuring length, capacity, and weight.  **Please continue to practice identifying the coins penny, nickel, and dime and review their values.
